Presented by Wells Fargo and powered by SHARE Charlotte, #GivingTuesdayCLT is Charlotte's local response to the global movement. Now in its fifth year, #GivingTuesdayCLT is a day for our community families, businesses, students and others to come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

Smart Start of Mecklenburg County's focus during this year's season of giving is The Basics Mecklenburg. This program is inspired by the fact that 80% of brain growth happens in the first three years of life. During this period, skill gaps between children from different backgrounds become clearly apparent. This does not need to be! Everyday interactions between children, their parents, and other caregivers provide abundant opportunities to give children from every background a great start in life.

The Basics are five evidence-based parenting and care-giving principles that encompass much of what experts agree is important for children from birth to age three. Every child from every background can benefit from routinely experiencing The Basics. Therefore, The Basics Mecklenburg campaign is working through a broad range of institutions and partners to ensure that every parent and caregiver is fully supported by family and friends to use The Basics practices in everyday life.
